I’ll be honest: I am a diehard casual in Marvel Rivals. My little brother sits at Plat 1 and treats ranked like a part-time job, my friends grind competitive every single night, and I’m over here hopping into a few matches per week and accidentally dumping my ultimate into a Loki clone. I’m not proud of it, but I’ve made peace with being bad. I’m okay with admitting that on the internet, where things live forever.

That doesn’t stop me from having thoughts, though. Casual players are a huge part of Marvel Rivals, and most of us are just squinting at the screen trying to figure out why the bad guy won’t die.

There Are Too Many Heroes, and My Brain Has Left the Chat

One thing Marvel Rivals absolutely nailed at launch was offering a massive roster. Loki can shapeshift and sneak, Doctor Strange opens portals, Hulk has to be knocked down to Bruce Banner before you can finish him off, and Spider-Man is, well, swinging around like he owns the place. Every hero has a distinct playstyle, and that’s great for variety.

But it’s also a nightmare for someone like me.

The hero select screen stares back at me like a final exam I didn’t study for. Since launch, the game started with 33 characters, added more in its first season, and has been dropping another hero every six weeks. Now that we’re in 2026, that number has only ballooned. If you haven’t actually played a hero, it’s nearly impossible to understand what their abilities are doing when you’re fighting against them.

Take Loki, for example. A friend was spectating my match and texted me that the green circle around Loki was his Regeneration Domain, which converts 30 percent of all damage into healing for allies. Meanwhile, I had been pummelling the guy inside that circle and wondering why nothing was happening. I would have known that if I had ever played Loki, but I haven’t. Has everybody really played every single hero and memorised all their abilities? Because this is exhausting.

Every New Hero Is a Pop Quiz I Didn’t Study For

The problem isn’t just awareness, it’s volume. If Marvel Rivals had launched with, say, 20 heroes, a new player could reasonably learn what everyone does over time. I managed it with Overwatch 2 back in the day, even without playing that much.

But Marvel Rivals is different. It keeps adding characters and complex interactions, and my casual brain just cannot keep up. Here are a few things I’ve learned the hard way:

  • 🟢 Loki’s green field turns damage into healing. Stop shooting the circle.

  • 🌀 Doctor Strange portals can drop an entire team behind you. Sorry about that.

  • 💚 Hulk isn’t finished until you deal with tiny Bruce Banner fleeing the scene.

  • 🕸️ Spider-Man will zip around and make you question your aim, your life choices, and your internet connection.

That’s already a lot. And honestly? I’m cooked.

Visual Distinguishability? Never Heard of Her

Learning abilities is one thing, but recognising who you’re fighting is a whole different battle. A lot of these heroes, while they feel different to play, can look extremely similar on the battlefield.

From a distance, I genuinely cannot tell Winter Soldier and Punisher apart. Invisible Woman and Dagger? Basically the same character unless you press your face against the monitor. Most of the female heroes have the same general look apart from their colour palette.

When you throw skins into the mix, I’m done for. Someone barrels toward me, and I have no idea if I should run, shoot, or just accept my fate. Even up close, the visual noise makes it hard to figure out exactly what you’re up against.

Here’s a completely scientific breakdown of my confusion:

I thought it was It was actually
Winter Soldier Punisher with a shotgun
Invisible Woman Dagger about to blind me
One blonde hero A completely different blonde hero
A tank I could fight A dive DPS deleting my health bar

The patch notes laugh at me every single season.

Skins Have Turned Me Into a Paranoid Mess

Skins make this so much worse. I can’t memorise a hero’s silhouette because every cool new skin changes the vibe entirely. It’s like the game is playing a prank on me. I’ll see a glowing figure sprinting at me and think, ‘Oh, that’s probably a support,’ and then it turns out to be a duelist who removes me from existence in half a second.

For a filthy casual trying to thrive in 2026, it’s a lot.

So, can a player like me survive? Maybe. I’m not asking for the game to slow down for my sake, but a little visual clarity and a slightly less overwhelming roster wouldn’t hurt. Until then, I’ll keep playing a few matches a week, failing to identify my enemies, and occasionally getting carried by my Plat 1 brother.

That’s all I can do. And honestly? I’m okay with that.
